Why Families Choose to Have a Funeral or Memorial Service Photographed

Why Families Choose to Have a Funeral or Memorial Service Photographed

When families are arranging a funeral or memorial service, photography may not be one of the first things they think about.

For some, the idea of having a photographer present can initially feel unusual. A funeral is personal, emotional and often very private.

Yet for many families, the photographs taken on the day become an important part of remembering not only the person who has died, but also the people who came together to honour their life.

At Life Stories by Craig, funeral and memorial photography is approached quietly, respectfully and with an understanding that the photographer should never become the focus of the occasion.

Remembering the People Who Were There

Funerals often bring together family and friends who may not have been in the same place for many years.

Some travel considerable distances to attend. Others may be elderly, and sadly it may be one of the last occasions when several generations of a family are together.

Photographs can preserve those connections.

They may capture a grandparent comforting a grandchild, old friends embracing, family members sharing memories or simply the quiet moments between people who cared deeply about the person being remembered.

These aren't necessarily photographs families appreciate immediately.

Sometimes their significance becomes much greater with time.

There Are Moments the Family May Not See

The immediate family experiences a funeral very differently from everyone else attending.

There may be flowers arriving, friends greeting one another outside, photographs being viewed, people signing a memorial book or quiet conversations taking place before the service begins.

While the family is focused on the service and their own emotions, many of these moments can pass unnoticed.

A professional funeral photographer can document them discreetly, creating a broader record of the day than the family themselves would otherwise have.

Funeral Photography Should Be Discreet

Funeral photography is very different from photographing a wedding, party or corporate event.

There should be no expectation that people pose for photographs or look towards the camera.

Much of the photography is observational.

The photographer works quietly, keeps an appropriate distance and understands when a photograph should — and shouldn't — be taken.

The objective isn't to document grief.

It is to document connection, remembrance and the way people came together to celebrate a life.

Photographing the Details That Tell a Story

Often it is the smaller details that say the most about someone.

Flowers chosen because they were a favourite. A photograph displayed beside the coffin. Medals, sporting memorabilia, a favourite hat, handwritten notes from grandchildren or objects representing a lifelong interest.

These elements have usually been selected by the family for a reason.

Photographing them helps preserve the story behind the service.

Memorial Services and Celebrations of Life

Funeral photography isn't limited to a traditional chapel or church service.

Increasingly, families are choosing memorial services and celebrations of life held after a cremation.

These may take place at a favourite beach, park, family home, club, function venue or somewhere that held particular meaning.

These less formal gatherings can provide wonderful opportunities to document people sharing stories, photographs and memories in a relaxed environment.

A Lasting Record for Family Who Couldn't Attend

Not everyone who wants to attend a funeral is always able to be there.

Family members may live interstate or overseas. Illness, age or other circumstances can also prevent people from attending.

A thoughtfully photographed collection can help them understand how the person was remembered and see the care that went into their farewell.

Life Stories by Craig

My approach to funeral and memorial photography comes from understanding both photography and funerals.

Having worked within the funeral industry, I understand the flow of a funeral service, the importance of discretion and the need to respect the family, funeral director, celebrant and everyone attending.

Life Stories by Craig provides funeral, memorial and celebration of life photography throughout Sydney and the Central Coast.

The aim is simple: to quietly preserve the people, details and moments that tell the story of a farewell.

Because although the day itself passes quickly, those photographs can become increasingly meaningful as the years go by.
